Coffee scrubs have been trending in the beauty circles for a few years now. Call us slow adopters, but as of a few weeks ago we had yet to try this caffeinated alternative on our faces or bodies (our morning consumption is a totally different story). Curious to know what the hype is all about, we asked Jessica Morelli, the woman behind beauty brand Palermo, for a tutorial on the benefits of coffee-based products for our skin.
As beloved as coffee is to consume, its benefits truly shine when used on your skin. Coffee is an excellent exfoliator because unlike salt and sugar it does not dissolve, so it provides an invigorating experience that will last as long as you'd like without having to use a ton of product.
The process of exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and encourages circulation making it an important step toward maintaining healthy skin.Coffee is also rich in antioxidants which have been found to repair existing skin damage by preventing free radicals. Caffeine, an antioxidant itself, acts as a constrictor, helping to release excess water retention and reducing the appearance of cellulite.
This is a process that must be maintained regularly in order to continue to receive these results as your body will always retain water. However, cellulite is also most prevalent in areas with low circulation so by regularly exfoliating with coffee this can exceptionally enhance the desired results.
Additionally, caffeine contains anti-inflammatory properties and has been found to reduce redness and irritation in skin. To Buy: Palermo Coffee Body Scrub - which is made with organic, fair trade coffee sourced from the coffee from a local roaster in our city of Brooklyn. ($44)
