I have a confession: I have never been a breasts girl, and by never I mean I never worried too much about them. In high school and college when I gained weight, they grew. When I lost weight, the shrank. I never fell into the large chested camp, nor did I consider myself small. I felt balanced and guess I was grateful that it was not an area where I was insecure (because I had many friends in that camp as well).
Then, I had children. My breasts became a lifeline. This may not be shocking to many, but after nursing two children for a total of four years one can feel a little less connected to their body. My oldest son asked me the other day if women's breasts just "fall off" after they are done feeding their babies. Metaphorically speaking, he is not too far from the truth. My breasts are still in tact, but let's be honest: they are not the same as they once were.
Perhaps in a state of denial, I chose not to update any of my bras after nursing. Again, not being one that is too focused on these things it was never a priority until I was recently chatting with a friend and the conversation turned to such matters. To say she had an intervention with me is not a stretch. She shared the physical benefits of correct support and the emotional ones (many of which come down to self care and the importance of making our bodies a priority, even on the days when idea of taking care of ourselves feels like a luxury we cannot afford).
Small steps can make a BIG difference; first on my agenda: purchase new bras in my current size. Revolutionary? Nah. Life changing? Absolutely.
I was recently introduced to ThirdLove and hand over my heart, it is the best thing that has ever happened to my closet. The simple app helped me asses my true cup size based on issues I had with my previous bras and diagrams that are insanely accurate in describing your breast "style".
After assessing my size, I ordered three bras based on the styles the ThirdLove tool recommended (hello, no dressing rooms and no guesswork). The Classic T-shirt, Lace Balconette and Classic Wireless arrived on my doorstep just in time for the holiday gatherings cycle. I cannot think of a better way to start the season than by gifting myself comfort, security and even a little restored confidence.
This is a theme I am adopting for my closet in the new year - more making myself (and my body) a priority, caring less about trends and more about how a piece makes me feel - be it a new scarf, a great pair of jeans or the best dang bras around!
