After a long, cold winter, spring's arrival is a welcomed delight. Nothing beats hanging up that wool coat in the back of the closet, and as the cherry blossom petals begin to carpet the ground, the sweaters become an afterthought.
The bright flowers feel like magic...or at least, they would, if it weren't for the itchy and watery eyes, the sneezing and wheezing, and the runny noses that accompany pollen season.
Aside from April showers, allergies might be spring's only downside. Fortunately, we've created a breakfast smoothie to help ease the discomfort. Keep in mind that to truly kick the symptoms to the curb, it's best to source your ingredients locally.
RECIPE: Makes two servings.
1/2 cup of spinach
1 peach - peeled and chopped
2 granny smith apples - peeled and chopped
3 tablespoons of local honey (with bee pollen if possible)
3 tablespoons of plain or vanilla yogurt
1 tablespoon of flaxseeds
1/3 cup of ice water
fresh lemon juice from 1 lemon
This one's simple: blend and serve. Sip and soothe the itch away!
p.s. For a more hearty, savory start to the day, we recommend these waffles with cheddar and scallions.
