Who here could use a vacation? Us too. Traveling can be an incredible opportunity to learn about far away places or to find gems in our own backyard. Depending on the destination, a trip can be exciting and exhilarating or relaxing and rejuvenating—or some combination of all four.

That said, travel can sometimes be exhausting, frustrating and a little bit scary. Exploring a new place can come with a lot of unknowns and expectations that it will be the BEST TRIP EVER can oftentimes lead to disappointment. We've all had a moment (or three) during recent trips where we found ourselves anxious or less than fulfilled by a trip and we've come up with a few tips to help avoid the pitfalls we've experienced in the past.

  • Have realistic expectations from the start. Raise your hand if you've ever tried to book too many activities during a vacation. That's what we thought and we're right there with you. We've all experienced that feeling when we end up wishing for a vacation from our vacation, right? Finding as much adventure as possible is always on the agenda, but we try to remind ourselves to relax a bit—this is vacation, after all!

  • Travel light. We end up hauling so much gear with us in our daily lives and vacation can be a perfect time to get away from all of that baggage. Don't you agree? We find that traveling with a few key basics, some great reads and a way to document the journey is the only way to go. Who wants to spend their vacation trying to figure out what to wear, right? Keep it simple by packing light and you'll be on your way in no time.

  • Find joy in the unexpected. Scared of flying? Frustrated that your train has been delayed (again)? Uncomfortable during the long stretch of your road trip? We play little tricks to help ease our minds. We smile at the adorable child one row over who is out-of-his-mind happy to be on an airplane. Why? Because he's right: flying through the air in a metal tube is a pretty spectacular occurrence (just ask these ladies!). If your train is running late, try making up stories about passers by. Train stations are perfect for it! And road trips can be long and uncomfortable at times, but having the right playlist can make all the difference. Trust us.

p.s. Unpacking doesn't have to be a chore either. Try this quick tip to freshen your suitcase.
