As February comes to a close, this month's Guest Style Editors Lisa Hackwith and Erin Husted share one last dose of wardrobe wisdom: the unique philosophy behind their apparel for Hackwith Design House. Their unique pieces -- from swimwear to basic tops to, soon, bridal attire -- are designed for real women of all shapes, sizes, and styles.
We have thought a lot in the past few years about our company’s mission. What does it mean to be American-made? Are we minimalists? How do our designs and our values intersect? We are still honing our answers, but our main goal is this: to make sustainable, beautiful clothing that empowers women to feel confident and go through their days focusing on what is most important to them.
We strive to be sustainable by making everything in our Minnesota studio, embracing fair labor practices, maintaining and encouraging a productive work environment, and fostering diverse ideas. When considering new lines for our website, those ideals are all factors.
When we launched HDH Swim, we decided to use a model who did not have the stereotypical “model” body type. We used a woman with the curves that we know a lot of women have. We wanted to demonstrate our swimsuits were for all women.
The next logical step was adding HDH Plus. We wanted HDH to fully embrace the philosophy that women’s bodies are as diverse as their skills, talents, and accomplishments. Diversity is about embracing all of the things that make us special, from our ideas to our senses of humor, from our careers to our homes, from our skin color to our bodies. Not one of us is the same, and we strive to ensure that HDH reflects that fact.
Each of our lines is created for women to tailor to their unique lifestyles. HDH Basics is the perfect canvas on which to craft an individually styled outfit. We make no more than 25 units of the special pieces in our Limited Edition and HDH Plus lines, ensuring that no two women show up at a party in the same top. HDH Swim has black-and-white tops and bottoms perfect for mixing and matching in different combinations. And soon, we will launch HDH Bridal to help every bride outfit herself and her bridesmaids for a day all about the vows, family, and friends, with no stress over dresses that don’t fit everyone's specific tastes.
Women kick ass every day, and our goal is to make it easier for them to get dressed in the morning.
