There are few things more important in your wardrobe then a well cut button-down shirt. Classic, seasonless, easy to wash-and-wear and simple to style; we think strong shirting as versatile as good denim.

While it may reign supreme in menswear, women seem to go in phases of loving and leaving the button-down trends. But, here at Clementine we are into quality over quantity and aim to build a closet of bold basics and well made garments. These button-down shirts from California Tailor certainly make the cut.

Sometimes the simplest pieces can stump us on styling. Here are two options, one for day and one for night, to showcase how we are currently wearing our favorite wardrobe staple.

For Day: Try pairing your favorite chambray shirt with a white or light colored jean (even in the cooler months). The contrasting combination works well with statement making accessories, like a floppy felt hat and chunky boots. Instead of grabbing your easy cross body try carrying an oversized soft leather clutch for an unexpected touch with this borrowed from the boys look.

For Night:  Take a basic white shirt and tuck it into a highwaisted flared jean. Leave the shirt open an extra button to make room for some great accessories. Instead of adding a big colorful bib necklace, try something more architectural like a scarf. To achieve the look featured: roll up a simple square scarf and tie high on the neck, any color or print will work with the minimal look. Forgo the quintessential nighttime clutch and try a structured bag instead.

The key to updating any classic is to add simple, modern touches to make it your own. Find the Shirt No. 1 in Lilly White Dot here and in Indigo Bay Blue here
